History
At the beginning of World War 2, America was in a depression. There were shortages of food and other resources. There were food lines and starvation was becoming a national tragedy. Something had to be done! The Government and educators quickly realized that the people needed to learn how to feed themselves. So the Victory Garden books were commissioned. They were basically gardening for dummies. The people were taught how to grow and preserve foods to feed themselves and their families. The writers realized that the readers were not wealthy and needed to be able to do this without spending money they did not have. It was a resounding success.
